What to expect from an Obstetrician visit?

An obstetrician is who specializes in a woman’s reproductive health during and after her childbirth. They take care for the women in pregnancy and immediately after childbirth. They take care of all the delivery procedures, whether normal or cesarean. An obstetrician is trained to do all of the things.

An obstetrician will deal with some of the most important health issues in your life, including checking your health during pregnancy, identifying complications if any and also check the health of the baby. An obstetrician can treat the woman if necessary and can also perform any surgery in the pelvic region if the need arises.

Because an obstetrician deals with such personal and sensitive health issues, the thought of seeing one especially if it is your first time might be troubling for some women. You can get nervous or embarrassed at having the doctor see your body or it is also possible that you hesitate to discuss your intimate issues with your obstetrician.

In this case, you need to learn what happens in an obstetrician visit and get your homework done in case you face any embarrassment.

Your appointment with the doctor will usually start with usual health check-up. The nurse will possibly weigh you and check your blood pressure. You might have your blood or urine tests too.
Your obstetrician might ask you a few questions about your personal life or take a note of your family health history. A health professional will be present in the room in case sonography or an x-ray is taken.

Use your appointment to ask as many questions you might possibly have even if the questions are intimate or embarrassing. You should be sure about your reproductive health and about your pregnancy period.

Remember your Obstetrician is your partner during pregnancy. Carry on that partnership by making and keeping up annual appointments.

·         Meat-
When it comes to meat, there are different types which you must avoid consuming. Pregnant women should avoid consuming seafood and rare undercooked beef or even poultry. There is a high risk of contamination with bacteria and salmonella.

Deli meat, on the other hand, is known to be contaminated with listeria. This causes miscarriage. It is known to cross placentas which will later infect the baby.

Also, there are certain types of fish used in sushi should be avoided. This is because of high levels of mercury. In fact, these types of meat fall under the top category of what not to eat during pregnancy.

Refrigerated and smoked seafood is labeled as jerky which should be avoided due to the contamination of listeria. This seafood falls under the category of the deli. However, doctors do recommend shelf-safe smoked seafood.

·         Packaged Foods:
This is a big no when it comes to what not to eat during pregnancy. Processed foods are unhygienic and carry the huge source of the sugary item that would lead to health issues to both mother and the baby. Especially, if you are including buffets and salad which carry the high risk of listeria contamination, then avoid adding in your food list.

·         Unpasteurized milk:
If you are drinking milk, then make sure to drink only pasteurized or ultra-heated milk. Unpasteurized milk is unhealthy. These unpasteurized milk carry a high risk of listeria contamination.

If you are attending any party where alcohol is served, make sure you don't even think of trying. Prenatal exposure to alcohol interferes with the healthy development of the baby. Depending on the amount and timing of use, alcohol consumption during pregnancy will lead to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Is Taking A Pap Smear Test A Necessity

Pap test or Pap smear is a procedure that is done for women to test for the presence of cervical cancer. The doctors recommend this test for every woman above 21 years who is sexually active.

Dr. Garima Tyagi too emphasizes this and stresses that it is an important test that no woman should miss. This test should be done once a year until the age of 35 even if the results of the tests are not positive. After this age, if three tests are not positive the test can be taken once in three years but it is necessary to be screened for cervical cancer.

Usually, it is the opinion that cancer strikes at an old age but in the case of cervical cancer it is found to be more prevalent in the young woman says this doctor practicing in Shree Narayan Hospital Ghaziabad.

There is nothing to fear about this test. A few cells are collected and tested for the presence of any kind of abnormal cells in the cervix. If there are none the chances of getting cancer is very remote, yet you need to continue this test as recommended by your doctor to be on the safer side.

In case there are some abnormal cells a further test is done on the type of these cells and then it is decided whether they are cancer forming cells. If the cells are found to be cancer forming the treatment is immediately started so as to stop their spreading and causing full-fledged cancer.

If you had not taken the pap smear test this would not be known about the presence of such cells. And in a few years time when it is too late and you would see some other physical symptoms that point out to be cancer. Then the cure would not be available and this can take away the life of the woman. If she is too young and she loses her life the family also will suffer.

So on the recommendation of your gynecologist you need to go through this pap smear test and be on the safer side. The doctor can decide the time of the test and may recommend some dos and don’ts before the test. Following this is important because the test result will be near perfect.
